How much cake should I order?

One of the most frequent questions I hear as a wedding cake designer is, "How much cake do I actually need to feed my guests?" It is a common source of stress for couples, but I promise you, the math is simpler than it seems.

Whether you are planning an intimate gathering or a grand ballroom reception, ordering the right

amount of cake ensures everyone gets a delicious slice without unnecessary waste.

A Few Pro-Tips from the Kitchen

  • The 80% Rule: If you are serving a full dessert bar, offering a variety of late-night snacks,

or hosting a heavy meal, ordering cake for approximately 80% of your guest count is a

smart strategy to avoid excess waste.

  • Planning for 100%: If you are serving only cake as your dessert, I highly recommend

ordering at least one slice per guest. After all, a Summerwood Sweets cake is often the

star of the show, and you will want to make sure everyone gets a delicious piece!

  • Don't forget the Kitchen cake: If your design calls for a smaller display cake but you

have a large guest list, we can easily supplement with "kitchen cakes" (sheet cakes) that

match the flavor and quality of your display cake.

  1. Book early: To ensure I have availability for your date, I recommend booking your

wedding cake at least 6 months in advance.

Speaking of planning, I often get asked what specific cake sizes look like for larger weddings. If you are currently finalizing your guest list, here is a helpful look at your options.

How size cake should I order for 150 guests?

When it comes to your wedding, choosing the right cake size is all about balancing the guest count with your design vision. For a wedding of 150 guests, here are two beautiful, custom-tailored options to consider:

  • The 3-Tier Tall Option (8”T/10”T/12”T): This configuration provides 156 servings, offering a stunning centerpiece with generous portions for your guests.

  • The 4-Tier Option (6”T/8”T/10”/12”): This choice yields 146 servings, creating a classic, tiered look that perfectly accommodates a guest list of this size.

Customizing Your Cake's Presence

Beyond the number of tiers, the structure of your cake can completely change its aesthetic:

  • Height and Layers: Our "tall" tiers feature 4 layers of cake instead of the traditional 3, adding extra height and elegance to your display.

  • Modern Double Barrels: For a truly modern, high-fashion look, we offer double-barrel tiers featuring 5 layers of cake, which provide a bold, dramatic profile.

Whether you prefer the classic appeal of our 4-tier design or the impressive stature of our tall 3-tier cakes, we can customize every layer to ensure your centerpiece is as functional as it is beautiful
